Dr. Robert Kohn - Psychiatrist and Researcher in Global Mental Health
Dr. Robert Kohn is a psychiatrist and researcher whose work focuses on psychiatric epidemiology and global mental health. His research has specialized in large-scale population studies to quantify how many individuals experience mental illness and how many receive care, particularly across countries in the Americas. Dr. Robert Kohn has contributed to multinational studies using community-based survey data from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Peru, and the United States. These studies have examined the 12-month prevalence of mental disorders and patterns of service use. His findings show that mental and substance use disorders account for a measurable share of disease burden in the Americas.
Robert Kohn, MD’s research as a psychiatrist has also included specific analyses of treatment gaps across sub-regions. His work reports that the proportion of untreated individuals with moderate to severe mental disorders exceeds half of the affected populations in many areas. Higher gaps are observed in Latin America compared to North America. He has also examined disparities in treatment among children, adolescents, and Indigenous populations, identifying consistently low levels of service utilization.
In addition to epidemiological studies, Robert Kohn, MD, has conducted research on risk factors, including social and cultural variables such as stress, stigma, and socioeconomic conditions. He has collaborated with the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization on research and advisory initiatives related to mental health systems and service delivery. He has also contributed data-driven insights to international public health efforts.
